Spears Randall Rhodes (1923-2021) - Class Of 1943

Montgomery resident Spears Randall Rhodes, 97, husband of Martha Jane Johnson Rhodes, passed away at home January 17, 2021. Spears and Martha Jane recently celebrated their 74th wedding anniversary. He was born September 5,1923, in Montgomery to Ethel and Frank Alexander Rhodes. He was the youngest of four children; the late Frank Alexander Rhodes Jr. , the late Ethel Rhodes Hosmer and the late William Slade Rhodes. He was the beloved father of Colley Rhodes Griffin (Michael), Melissa Rhodes Wood (John), Spears Randall Rhodes Jr.(Genie) and Rebecca Rhodes Sibley.

Mr. Rhodes is also survived by his grandchildren Rebecca Griffin Acken (John), Michael Spears Griffin (Meagan), John Halsey Wood Jr.(Marne), Martha Jane Wood Wolters (T.J.), Britton Rhodes Wood (Elizabeth), Randall Lanier Wood (Leslie), Melissa Wood Greenwood (Scott), Elizabeth Melissa Teague Rhodes, Martin Randall Rhodes (Ashley), Ivan Lionel Hand III (Nicole), Stephen Rhodes Hand (Kendall), and 32 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Rhodes served his country honorably as a B-17 bomber pilot in the 8th Air Force, 447th bomb group in World War II. He was an industrialist who, with his brother Billy, successfully ran Excelsior Brick Company for over 46 years.

Mr. Rhodes was a long time member and served as a deacon emeritus of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Montgomery, Alabama.

As a member of America's greatest generation, he loved the Lord, his family, his country and the great outdoors.

There will be a private family graveside service. All memorials may be made to Trinity Presbyterian Church, 1728 South Hull Street, Montgomery, AL 36104.
