Mary Florence Skehan (1896-1953) - Class Of 1915

Mary Florence Skehan

Mary Florence was the daughter of Mary Phillips Fitzpatrick and Richard William Skehan, formerly of Montgomery, Alabama, and she was the great granddaughter of Benjamin Fitzpatrick, former governor of Alabama.  Her uncle was Kelly Fitzpatrick, the well-known Alabama artist.  She was born on May 2, 1896, in Talladega, Alabama, and died at age 57 on June 20, 1953, in Talladega, Alabama.

MISS MARY FLORENCE SKEHAN, SCHOOL FOR DEAF TEACHER, DIES

     TALLADEGA, Ala., June 20 - Miss Mary Florence Skehan, longtime teacher at the Alabama School for the Deaf here, died of a heart attack Saturday shortly after being taken to a local hospital.
     Miss Skehan, who was in her late 50's, had been a supervisor-teacher at the Alabama School for the Deaf since 1928.  Before joining the faculty of that school in 1928, she had been a teacher in the Talladega public school system.
     A lifelong resident pf Alabama, Miss Skehan was the daughter of the late Richard and Mary Fitzpatrick Skehan of Winterboro.  She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church here and also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Inter Se Club.
     Only immediate survivor is a sister, Mrs. Carson Baker, Talladega.
     Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at the First Presbyterian Church here with Dr. William Crowe, pastor, officiating.  Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Usrey directing.
