In Memory Of Our Poets

Arthur Caldwell Hartley, III (1945-2012) - Class Of 1963

ARTHUR HARTLEY (1945 - 2012)

Arthur Caldwell Hartley III, 66, of Leeds, was welcomed to Heaven on September 1, 2012. He was born on November 15, 1945 in Montgomery, Alabama. Arthur attended the University of Alabama where he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity, and he spent his years after college enjoying life and working in commercial real estate in the Birmingham area.

Arthur loved his home on the lake where he enjoyed reading and fishing. He was a lifelong outdoorsman and avid hunter, fisherman, and marksman of sporting clays. Arthur would tell you it was a blessing to not only enjoy nature but to teach and share these passions with his children and grandchildren.

He was a man of tremendous faith, actively involved in Mountain Brook Community Church. Arthur's love for his Heavenly Father shined through his love and concern for others. He did for others before himself and was always the first to check in and offer a helping hand at a moment's notice. Arthur's strength in God was always inspirational to those close to him, and his compassionate heart was also evident in his love for animals, especially those he rescued: Pumpkin, Purdy, Boa, and Holly.

And while Arthur had many passions in life, there is no question that his greatest earthly love was his family. He was an active part of any activity that included his children or grandchildren. Whether it be a business venture or a sporting event, he was always there, and he was their number one fan. Arthur's love for his family was only rivaled by their love for him, and he will forever be adored and appreciated.

Arthur is preceded in death by his parents, Kittye Durden Hartley and Arthur Caldwell Hartley Jr. He is survived by his son, Arthur Caldwell Hartley IV (Amy) of Chelsea; his daughter Blair Hartley Tracy (Tim) of Birmingham; his sister, Gail Hartley Longshore (Bobby) of Montgomery, his grandchildren, Arthur Caldwell Hartley V, Hannah Susan Smith Hartley, Jackson Brady Hartley, Mallie Hartley Tracy, and Taylor Madison Tracy; his long-time companion, Barbara Goodwillie of Birmingham and faithful friend, Sadie James of Montgomery.

Visitation will be Wednesday, September 5th at 10:00 a.m. at Mountain Brook Community Church. A Celebration of his Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. A graveside service will be held at Greenwood Cemetery in Montgomery, Alabama on Saturday, September 8th at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Shelby County Humane Society or Mountain Brook Community Church.
