SCOTT, Vivian Butler, died on December 6, 2006 at Baptist South Hospital, Montgomery, after a seven-year battle with Multiple Myeloma. Her final days were spent quietly with James M. Scott, her husband of 46 years, and their three children, Anderson Scott of Atlanta, and Fairlie Scott Herron and James M. Scott, Jr. both of Montgomery. Her brother Anderson Butler of Honolulu, Hawaii and her six grandchildren also survive her. Vivian was born in Montgomery on May 13, 1937. She attended Cloverdale School and Lanier High School, Sweet Briar College (B.A. Latin, 1959), and the University of Alabama (M.A. English, 1960). She served as head of both the Latin and English Departments at the Montgomery Academy. She later served on that school's board of directors. She also taught English at A.U.M. Vivian served as vestry member, senior warden, and longtime head of the Altar Guild of Grace Episcopal Church, Mt. Meigs, AL. For twenty years prior to her illness, her endless hours of work in all conditions, from August's heat to January's cold, made the Grace Church gardens a place of national renown and provided the altar with abundant flowers. She bore seven years of illness without complaint. Her children remember her as an advocate, a leader, a gardener, a quilter extraordinaire, a traveler, an educator, and the greatest speller that ever was. The family particularly thanks the kind ladies who unfailingly took Vivian to lunch on Fridays during her illness. In lieu of flowers please send a contribution to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation, 51 Locust Avenue, Suite 201, New Canaan, CT 06840 or Grace Episcopal Church, Garden Account, P.O. Box 24, Mt. Meigs, AL 36057. Her service will be held at Grace Church on Saturday, December 9, at 11:00 a.m. Visitation with the family will follow the service at her home.
