Robert "Bobby" E. Brock - Class Of 1953

Robert Edward (Bobby) Brock, a resident of Fairhope, Alabama died on November 6, 2023.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Mary Lucie Carmichael Brock; sons, Mike Brock (Tammy), Jim Brock (Ted), and Davis Brock (Mary Elizabeth); grandchildren, Michael Brock (Megan), Rollins Brock, Blythe Brock Mays (Teddy), Weston Brock, Hollon Brock; and great-grandchildren, James Brock and Annie Brock and numerous nephews and nieces. Bobby was preceded in death by his parents, Myrtle and Fred Brock; brothers, Dan, Peter, and Davis; sisters, Betty Brock Barkley and Irene Brock Sanford.

Bobby was born on December 17, 1934. He grew up in Montgomery, Alabama, where he graduated from Sidney Lanier High School in 1953. Bobby was an excellent athlete, lettering for multiple years in football, basketball, and track and field. Bobby was an All-State basketball player and played in the first All-State basketball tournament in Tuscaloosa, Alabama as a high school senior in 1953. Bobby signed a full football scholarship with VPI (now Virginia Tech) in 1953.  He attended VPI for one year, participating in football, baseball, and basketball.

After college, Bobby stayed involved with sports for all his adult life. He loved the kids on his Pelzer Homes Youth Baseball teams. They won many championships at Dannelly School Southeastern League. He became one of the top basketball and football referees in Alabama, officiating hundreds of high school football and basketball games. Bobby was also a top official for the Southeastern Conference from 1965-1972, officiating games coached by Adolph Rupp, Press Maravich, and other top coaches.

Bobby and Mary Lucie were lifelong First Baptist Church, Montgomery, Alabama members. They taught youth Sunday School for many years, and Bobby was a Poundstone Sunday School class member. Bobby also served as a Deacon at First Baptist.

Bobby loved the Lord, his family, and sports. In his adult years, he played softball with the famed Optimist Club, and he loved to play golf with his brother, Davis, and spend time with his family. He was always present for his grandson’s sporting events and even followed horse racing because of his granddaughter’s career in Lexington, Kentucky. Bobby came to be a rabid Alabama fan, though he commented that it was an acquired taste.

A celebration of Bobby’s life will take place at Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Home, Fairhope, on Friday, November 10, 2023, at 10:30 am. Visitation will be held 30 minutes prior to the service. Interment will follow on Saturday, November 11, 2023, with a private family ceremony at Greenwood Cemetery in Montgomery.
