William "Billy" House Chambless, MD (1929-2006) - Class Of 1947

CHAMBLESS, Dr. William House died June 5, 2006 in Birmingham, Alabama. Born in Montgomery, Alabama on January 5, 1929, he was the son of Sophie Lou Hall Chambless and James Lloyd "Jack" Chambless. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers- James Lloyd "Jack" Chambless, Jr. and Jean Alexander "Chuck" Chambless and his precious daughter, Leisa Chambless. He is survived by his wife, Billie Ruth Tyus Chambless; two daughters, Carol Chambless Wright and Gayle Chambless Cool, both of Birmingham; two sons-in-law, Lee Anthony Wright and Dr. Timothy Alden Cool; seven grandchildren, Amber Wright Boylan, Avery Arrington Wright, Ab-bey Gayle Collyns Wright, Walker Chambless Wright, Brent William Cool, Leisa Ashley Cool and Carol Alexandrea Cool; one brother, John Roquemore Chambless, Sr.; sisters-in-law, Jackie Chambless, Joanne Chambless and Nancy Chambless as well as nine nieces and nephews. He attended Sidney Lanier High School, graduated from Auburn University where he was a member of SAE Fraternity, AED Pre-Medical and lettered in track (pole-vaulting); graduated from Emory University School of Medicine where he was a member of Phi Chi Medical Fraternity; interned at the Medical College of Virginia; served two years in the U.S. Navy in Norfolk and Portsmouth, Virginia, received five years of surgery residency at Crawford W. Long Hospital and V.A. Hospital, in Atlanta, Georgia. He was a dedicated physician in practice from 1962 to 1997. He was a member of the Alabama College of Surgeons, American College of Surgeons, Montgomery County Medical Society, Medical Association, State of Alabama and the Montgomery Surgical Society. He was also Montgomery County Coroner for 10 years. He was instru-mental in initiating and training the first paramedics for Montgomery. He was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church and a Blue-Gray Colonel member. He was also a life-time member of the Auburn Alumni Association. Graveside services will be held at Greenwood Cemetery on Friday, June 9th at 11:00am with Dr. Carl Stegall & John R. Chambless, Sr. officiating. Honorary pall-bearers will be Dr. Timothy Alden Cool, Lee Anthony Wright, William House Chambless, II, Brian Morris Chambless, John Roquemore Chambless, Jr. Mark Norman Chambless, Frank Montgomery Chambless, Zachary Michael Boylan, Louis Rushton Rice, Brent William Cool, Walker Chambless Wright and William House Chambless, III. The family requests no flow-ers. Donations may be made to The Leisa Chambless Endowment Scholarship Fund at U.A.B. Gift Records, A.B. 1230, 1530 3rd Avenue South, Birmingham, Alabama 35294-0112 and direct to the attention of Daphne Powell. Visitation will be held at the home of Marti Chambers and Rush Rice, 3405 Box-wood Drive, Montgomery, Alabama on Thursday, June 8th from 5:30pm until 7:00pm.
