William Miller - Class Of 1943

William (Bill) E. Miller 'Paw Paw', age 76, a lifelong resident of Montgomery, Alabama, died on Sunday, April 8, 2001.

Funeral services will be held from Leak-Memory on Wednesday, April 11 at 11:00 a.m. with Bishop Paul A. Duffy and Dr. Charles Hays officiating.

Mr. Miller was born May 20, 1924, of French and Irish descent, to Justus Lolamon and Clara Barganier Miller.

One of his ancestors was William LaPrade who fought at Valley Forge. His great-grandfather was a veteran of the War Between the States. John McBride Miller. Another ancestor was William J. LaPrade who helped Andrew Dexter plan the city of Montgomery.

Attending Capitol Heights grammar and junior high schools, Mr. Miller graduated from Sidney Lanier High School.

Married to Lillie Mae Hall on December 1, 1944, he is survived by his loving wife of 56 years and their three children, Tommy and Bonnie (Miller) Shanks, William H. (Bill) and Shotzie Miller, Dale & Kitty (Miller) Collier. He had nine grandchildren, Kelley Miller, Clay Miller, Andy Miller, Justin Eugene Shanks, Jason Shanks, Tiffani (Shanks) Hudgins, Teresa (Shanks) Segrest, Tom Shanks, and Lindsey Collier. He had nine great-grandchildren, William Stone and Taylor Miller, Zachary William Miller, Jonathan Hudgins, Craig and Emily Shanks, Chandler Shanks, and Hannah Segrest. Two sisters, Mrs. Joan (Miller) Turner and Mrs. Carol (Miller) Thrash, survive him.

With a career in sales, Mr. Miller sold International Trucks for 20 years at Brewbaker International and worked for other firms before his retirement. He enjoyed flying, earning his private pilot's license from Mr. Ed Long. A member of the Civil Air Patrol, he served on many rescue missions. A former Sunday School Superintendent and teacher; a constant witness for Christ, and a Capitol Heights United Methodist Church member, his greatest love on this earth was for his wife, Lillie, their children, his grandchildren, and his great-grandchildren. A Past Master of the Masonic Fraternity and a Past Grand Patron of the Order of the Eastern Star, State of Alabama, he was also a member of the Sons of the Confederate Veterans.

Pallbearers will be Justin and Jason Shanks, Clay and Andy Miller, and Jay Hudgins and Hybart Majors.

Honorary pallbearers will be Richard Spivey, Bob Savage, John Weyna, Dr. David Knapp, and Dr. William McGuffin.

The family requests no flowers, and that memorials be made to Capitol Heights United Methodist Church or your favorite charity.
