In Memory Of Our Poets

Verbon C. Sanders (-1942) - Class Of 1942

Verbon was the son of L. Clarence and Lillian Sanders, and the only brother of Lula Ethel Sanders (McGuff), Class Of 1936.

According to Dr. Wesley Phillips Newton, Class of 1943, and author of Montgomery in the Good War, Private First Class Verbon Sanders lost his life in 1942 on a narrow beach east of the larger island's airstrip when a large Japanese force launched an attack across a shallow river toward the airstrip.   Newton states that the citation accompanying the posthumous award of a Silver Star read: "Private First Class Sanders held his dangerously exposed position against a superior number of Japanese.  Even though severely wounded, he maintained stubborn resistance until he was killed by the onrushing enemy force.  He gallantly gave up his life in the service of his country."
