ROTH, Sarah Baldwin Bethea, 78, a resident of Montgomery, AL, died on Friday, August 1, 1997 at her residence after an extended illness. She was preceded in death by her parents, Theodore Baldwin Bethea and Minna Wellborn Dent Bethea; by her husband, Lt. Colonel John Sim Roth; and by her sister, Mary Elizabeth Bethea Vickers. She was a lifelong member of St. John's Episcopal Church and a life member of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America. Graveside services will be held at Greenwood Cemetery on Monday, August 4, 1997 at 1:00 p.m. with the Rev. Jim Walter, officiating. Friends and family members will assemble at the gravesite. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Minna Dent Roth Hill and Michael R. Hill, Montgomery, AL; two step-children and in-laws, Teddie Roth Jones and Paul Jones, Charleston, SC, and Phillip Roth and Laura Ann Jones Roth, Montgomery, AL; four granddaughters: Sarah Bethea Hill, Julia Edith Hill, Michelle Elizabeth Hill, and Laura Rachel Hill, all of Montgomery, AL; five step-grandsons, and two nieces. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made in her honor to St. John's Episcopal Church.

Died: August 1, 1997, at home, 3310 South Hull Street, Montgomery, AL
The daughter of Theodore Baldwin Bethea and Minna Wellborn Dent Bethea, Sally was educated in the public schools of Montgomery, and studied piano and dance, which was her first love, throughout her school career. She graduated from Sidney Lanier High School in 1936, with a Latin Diploma. She attended Alabama Polytechnic Institute in Auburn, Alabama for only two years due to the Depression, and upon her return home, she was employed by the Farm Security Administration. During World War II, she began working at Maxwell Field as a secretary. Also during the war, she served as the secretary of the Cadet Club.
She married John Sim Roth (Lanier Class of 1932) on January 2, 1952, and resigned her position at Maxwell, but two years later resumed her job at Maxwell to support the family of six due to Johnny's illness. After twenty-nine years of working as a Civil Servant, Sally retired in 1971.
She had two step children:

Sally was a member of the Francis Marion Chapter of the DAR in Montgomery, AL, a lifetime member of the Colonial Dames of America, and a lifelong member of St John's Episcopal Church in Montgomery, AL.
She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, and by her only sister, Betty Bethea Vickers (Lanier Class of 1928).
