Born June 4, 1913, Alva was the son of Claude L. Ray and Elizabeth Durr Fitzpatrick Ray. He graduated from Sidney Lanier High School in 1933. He was and the brother of Eugene Driver Ray (Lanier Class of 1930), Mary Elizabeth "Sis" Ray (Spottswood) (Lanier Class of 1934), Claudia Ray (Timberlake) (Lanier Class of 1938), and Clara Frances Ray (Boyle) (Lanier Class of 1946). Alva served with the Armed Forces in the Southwest Pacific during World War II and was present at the Philippine Liberation.
Alva married Juliet R. Ruth, Class of 1943, at St. John's Episcopal Church in Montgomery, Alabama, on May 28, 1947. At the time of their marriage, Alva was employed by the Engineering Department of Montgomery County, a position he held for six years. He later became a registered land surveyor, surveying land in Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi. He was employed with the Vulcan Materials Company for 26 years, and he retired from the United States Army Reserve in 1973, after having served for 28 years.
He was an avid golfer and gardener, and he enjoyed the outdoors. One could often find him walking in his College Street neighborhood during his retirement years.

Hi-I am Billy Ray. I have some information for you to update Dad's profile.
Dad passed away on January 1, 2005 at around 1:00 AM at the ripe old age of 91. His competive nature made him stick around to see yet another year.
My sister Juliet Hardwick Ray Jones is remarried and her last name is now Greshan she lives in Tuscaloosa. Mom passed away March 9, 2002.
