In Memory Of Our Poets

Mary Houghton McLemore (1948-2023) - Class Of 1966

Mary Houghton McLemore, age 75, passed away on July 22, 2023. She was preceded in death by her brother Price Chrenleigh McLemore, Jr., and her parents, Price Chrenleigh McLemore and Eleanor Streety Houghton McLemore.

She is survived by her husband William C. Elliot, sister-in-law Mary Ray Campbell McLemore, nephew Price C. McLemore, III (Dinah), niece Mary-Aileen McLemore Conniff (Richard), and five grand nephews and nieces Mary Evelyn McLemore, Price C. McLemore IV, Stephen McLemore, Campbell Jernigan, and Elijah Jernigan, and many cousins and family.

Born in Montgomery, Mary Houghton McLemore was raised at the Oaks Plantation in Waugh, Alabama. She graduated from Sidney Lanier High School where she was a prolific writer for the Blue And White Newspaper. She attended Mount Vernon College and finished at Auburn University with an English degree.

Professionally, Mary was a highly esteemed real estate paralegal for Capell & Howard. As recently relayed to the family, “She gave all the young lawyers piss and vinegar schooling you couldn’t get anywhere else”. She finished her career years with KinderCare in the property acquisitions department and oversaw all real estate closings.

Mary loved being active in her community. She headed the fundraising efforts for Friends of the Library, enjoyed volunteering for the East Montgomery Historical Society on Pike Road, and was a member of The Junior League and Colonial Dames. Mary was well known for her creative and political writing. Her letters were frequently featured in newspapers and multiple times read on Bill O’Reilly’s Fox News show. None could match her storytelling skills and sharp wit. It was well known that she didn't tolerate fools or very much nonsense!

Her firecracker personality and bulletproof exterior hid her softer side. Many would be surprised to learn she was a talented needle pointer and dabbled in piano and guitar. She loved animals and enjoyed horses growing up. She was kind-hearted and always the first to help family and friends in their need.

A graveside service will be held Monday, July 31, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at Greenwood Cemetery 909 Lincoln Road Montgomery, Alabama 36109 with nephew Price C. McLemore III officiating. Following the service, the family will receive friends at the home of Price and Dinah McLemore, 2430 Woodley Rd, Montgomery.

In place of flowers, donations may be made to the Price C. McLemore Excellence in Teaching Award at The Montgomery Academy.
