Charlotte E. "Betsy" Skinner (Henle) (1942-2022) - Class Of 1959

Charlotte E. S. "Betsy" Henle age 80, of Birmingham, passed away on Wednesday, October 12, 2022.

Betsy was born on March 25, 1942, in Montgomery, Alabama. She was a graduate of Sidney Lanier High School in Montgomery. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1963 in English and a Master of Arts degree in English in 1972.

Betsy touched many young lives as a veteran teacher of 37 years at Mountain Brook High School. She was the advisor to the high school's yearbook, The Olympian, for those 37 years. She retired in 2004.

During her tenure, she was awarded the Mountain Brook City School Professional Incentives Program and the Ann Pritchard Award for being an outstanding professional educator from 1998-1999. She also was awarded the Mountain Brook Exchange Club Teacher of the Year distinction in 2000. She leaves behind a legacy of friendship and mentorship to countless individuals. She appreciated the written word, a story well told, and a variety of music.

Betsy was a beloved wife, daughter, sister, and godmother. She was devoted to her family, friends, and community. She was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Birmingham. She was a member of the Birmingham Junior League, the Board of Directors of City Stages, The Birmingham Southern College Fine Arts Society, The Club, the Board of Managers of Virginia Samford Theatre, and the Advisory Board of the VST STARS Program. She was a patron of The Virginia Samford Theatre and an avid supporter of the performing arts.

Betsy is preceded in death by her parents, Lillian J. Skinner and William Hobson Skinner, Jr., of Montgomery, Alabama, her loving husband of 57 years, Phil B. Henle, her sister Susan Goodloe, and her brother, William Hobson Skinner III. She is also survived by two godchildren and their families: Zoe Burgess Dwyer (David) and daughters Margaret Isabel Dwyer and Mary Ingalls Dwyer; Bel Burgess Hart (Jeff) and sons Jack Summers Hart II and Charles Henle Hart, all of Birmingham, Alabama.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, October 20th at 11:00 a.m. at Ridout's Valley Chapel, 1800 Oxmoor Road, Homewood, Alabama. Private interment will be in Montgomery, Alabama, at Oakwood Cemetery. Ridout's Valley Chapel is directing.
