Charles Leigh Gill (1943-2017) - Class Of 1961

Dr. Leigh Gill died on Tuesday, November 28, 2017, in Winter Park, FL, after an extended illness. He is survived by his daughters Kerrie Leigh Gill and Katie Gill Warner, two grandchildren, Jack Nelson Warner and Ella Lou Warner, and by his older brothers Dr. Gordon N. Gill and Richard H. Gill.

Dr. Gill was born on January 27, 1943, in Montgomery and attended Sidney Lanier High School, the University of Alabama and Auburn University School of Veterinary Medicine. Following an internship, he practiced in Winter Park, Florida until his retirement. He was a skilled veterinary surgeon on both large and small animals. Dr. Gill was also an avid hunter and outdoorsman. He maintained his lifelong ties to Alabama and to his friends and family here.

Until his health prohibited travel, Dr. Gill supported and sustained the El Hogar Orphanage and Agricultural School in the Honduras for many years. He became involved through All Saints Episcopal Church of Winter Park. He created and developed a dairy farm for orphan children from which the orphanage and school became self-sustaining. Dr. Gill provided training, expertise, and funding, which included acquiring a farm truck and heavy equipment. Dr. Gill delivered the truck by driving it from Winter Park to the Honduras. Over the years, his work and devotion saved and improved the lives of thousands of children.

A Private Memorial Service will be held in Winter Park, Florida.
