In Memory Of Our Poets

Lucia T. Clement (Hasty) (1922-2021) - Class Of 1940

Lucia Clement Hasty died peacefully on Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 2021. Born on July 17, 1922, in Charleston, South Carolina, she was the daughter of Ella Gourdine du Pont Clement and Edward Mortimer Boykin Clement. She had one sister, Ella du Pont Clement, who died as a young child in 1927. Lucia attended Ashley Hall in Charleston, graduated from Sidney Lanier High School in Montgomery, and attended Sophie Newcomb College in New Orleans.

As a young person, she developed the resilience that typifies her generation as they endured both the Great Depression and World War II. While a student, Lucia met the love of her life Curtis Bush Hasty, Jr. They were married on January 18, 1944, while he was serving as a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps.

Artistic and creative, Lucia was a passionate painter and flower arranger who also enjoyed sailing and golf with her beloved husband. As a life-long member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, she served as a Sunday school teacher, as a member of the altar guild, and in her nineties as an enthusiastic participant in the church's exercise class.

Lucia was predeceased by her husband. She is survived by her children, Diana Hasty Plosser (Gray), Andrea Hasty Bartley (Homer), and Curtis Bush Hasty III (Nita); her grandchildren, Taylor Plosser Davis(Rick), Lucia Plosser Tabb(Ashley), Brice Clement Bartley(Sheila), Mary Bartley Goodrich(Braxton), Amelia du Pont Bartley, and Curtis Bush Hasty IV (Holly); and twelve great-grandchildren, George, Callie, Henry, Lillie, Edward, Comer, Brice, William, Bart, Marilyn, Charlie, and Mary Ruth. On Wednesday, December 1, 2021, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, there will be a visitation at 10:00 A.M. and a memorial service at 11:00 A.M.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorial gifts to the Claypool Scholarship fund within the St.Luke's foundation or a charity of your choice.
