Gertrude Lanier Gibson McGehee, was born May 12, 1927 and passed away August 31, 2012. She was the daughter of Sidney Lanier Gibson and Mary Lee Gibson of Verbena, AL and was named for her grandmother, Gertrude Lanier, the sister of Georgia Poet and Sidney Lanier. She grew up in Verbena and attended school in Montgomery, living during the week with her aunt, Mary Carr Gibson Comer, a widow of Alabama governor, B.B. Comer. She graduated from Margaret Booth School in Montgomery and then Huntingdon College in 1949 with a degree in English and a minor in music. She and Edward Stokes McGehee of Montgomery were married in 1949 and recently celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary. After several years as a Navy wife, living in Pearl Harbor, Charleston, and Annapolis, she and Stokes settled in Mountain Brook, AL. She was a member of Canterbury United Methodist Church, the Fred Kelly class, The Club, The Ballerina Club, and several garden clubs through the years. Gertrude loved gardening, the arts, and music. She played and taught piano in her home for several years. She was a quiet and lovely person who brought joy to those who crossed her path. She is preceded in death by her brothers, Sidney Lanier Gibson, Jr. and Joseph Carr Gibson and her sister, Judith Gibson Robinson. She is survived by her husband, Edward Stokes McGehee and her sons, Edward Stokes McGehee, Jr. (Rosa Harvill) and James Hardie McGehee (Melissa Morris). A memorial service will be at the Chapel of Canterbury United Methodist Church at 11:00 am Tuesday, September 4, 2012 with a graveside service at Verbena Cemetery at 2:00 pm. The family request that memorials be made to Canterbury United Methodist Church, 350 Overbrook Rd. Mt. Brook, AL 35213. Martin Funeral Home of Clanton, AL directing services.
