Howard Burton Upchurch (1911-1944) - Class Of 1928

According to Wesley Phillips Newton, Class of 1943 and author of Montgomery in the Good War, Captain Howard Upchurch lost his life while serving our country in the European Theater in 1944.

July 9, 1910 – June 6, 1944

He was a Captain in the 377th Parachute Field Artillery Battalion, 101st Screaming Eagles Division, Airborne Field Artillery, and jumped into France behind enemy lines before the main landing on D Day, June 6, 1944. In first wave of paratroopers, his unit jumped on top of a German Command Post and he was killed before landing when his chute got hung up in a tree. His body was returned to Montgomery after the War for burial in Greenwood Cemetery, Montgomery, AL.
