ROBERT GLASS

Obituary

On the evening of September 25th, 2012, Robert W. Glass passed on home to be with Jesus with his family by his side.

Bobby was born on October 22nd, 1930, in the Friendship community near Tallassee, Alabama. He grew up in the country, graduating from Tallassee High School. Feeling the need to follow his since of duty, Bobby joined the Alabama National Guard at age 16. His service would span 36 years, including a tour with the 25th Infantry Division during the Korean War, earning the Combat Infantry Badge. In Korea, he attained the rank of First Sargent. After returning home, he received a Direct Commission, retiring at the rank of Colonel. Appointed by the President, he served as State Director of the Selective Service System of Alabama for 13 years. Bobby served more than half his life for his country, a service of duty and honor.

Bobby's passion was also teaching. He graduated from Troy University in 1955 and the University of North Carolina in 1958. He also attended Auburn University, University of Alabama, Vanderbilt University, and Auburn University at Montgomery. He taught at Sidney Lanier High School, Montgomery Academy, and Shorter. Bobby worked with the State of Alabama Civil Defense Department teaching and instructing police, fire departments, and guard units in civil defense. He then served with the State of Alabama Education Department, serving in several capacities from selecting and writing text books to evaluating school systems.

Bobby's most cherished and loved accomplishments were his family. He and Annie Laura met in Tallassee, fell in love and married on June 23rd 1951. It was two weeks later that he left for Korea. Their love was strong and true. They raised three children, Brad, Missy, and Bill. He was asked one time about his many accomplishments and his life. Bobby replied that you could take away all that he had done and all the material possessions he had collected over the years. Bobby said that his greatest achievement was his marriage, and three children that are all Christians and leading Christian homes.
