Charles Carson Harkins, Jr. passed away Tuesday, September 25, 2012. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia on October 4, 1944 and moved with his family to Montgomery in 1958 where he spent the rest of his life. Charles graduated from Sidney Lanier High School in 1963 and attended Troy State University and Auburn University, Montgomery. He retired from the Alabama Department of Education after more than 30 years of service. He was a devoted member of Trinity Presbyterian Church since 1958 and served as president of his Sunday School Class. Charles was an enthusiastic world traveler and enjoyed bowling, baseball, music, movies and discussing politics.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents Charles C. and Verlon Johnson Harkins. He was also preceded in death by his nephew, Jon Christopher Harkins. Charles is survived by his brother Jon David Harkins (Rebecca) of Tampa, FL; a niece Jennifer Harkins Dubrawski (John) and their two sons Christopher Kai and Taj Pierce, all of Aliso Viejo, CA; 2 uncles, Harold Johnson and Clark Johnson, both of Lawrenceville, GA; and many loving cousins.

Particular thanks go to Charles' friends, Coleman Yarbrough, Donald Reed and Linda Till, for their dedication to Charles throughout his illness. The family also deeply appreciates the staff of Elmcroft at Halcyon Assisted Living Facility for their kind and thoughtful care of Charles over the past year.

Funeral Services will be held at 2 pm (CST) on Monday, October 1 at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Montgomery, AL. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the Westminster Room of the church. Interment will take place in Lawrenceville, GA on Wednesday, October 3. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association (alz.org) or Trinity Presbyterian Church.
