Robert Larry Strickland was born in Dothan, Alabama on 11 June 1938 to Henry D. Strickland and his wife, Robbie Spooner Strickland. He graduated in the class of 1956 from Sidney Lanier High School in Montgomery, Alabama, where he was voted "Best Looking" and well loved. He attended Howard College (now Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama) as a ministerial student. In his junior year at college, he was killed in an automobile accident on his way back to Howard on the Birmingham Highway outside Clanton, Alabama. The car left the highway and was driven by his brother, Jim, who survived the accident on a rainy highway. Larry also had one sister. His funeral was held in the First Baptist Church of Montgomery, Alabama and he was buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Montgomery.
