Sonny Stephenson was a life guard at YMCA during my youth. In High School I had him as a teacher at Lanier. He was also a coach. Sonny died in an auto accident in Gulf Shores on Saturday March 15, 1986. We miss him dearly. He was also our neighbor.

Sonny Stephenson was not only a great coach, but was a personal friend of our family for many years. Our family and his family were neighbors in the late 50's and early 60' s to the best of my knowledge. His mom and my mom were best friends and he was an only child and it was devastating when she lost him to the terrible car accident. We kep in touch with her until she passed away and I can't remember exactly what year that was, but she was a fine person as well. Just found this recently while looking over the Lanier alumni page and it is sure sad to see so many teachers as well as students that are no longer with us. Some older and some much too young to have passed away.
