In Memory Of Our Poets

Robert "Bobby" C. Boone (1936-2012) - Class Of 1955

Robert C "Bobby" BooneRobert Clark (Bobby) Boone, 75, of Freeport, Fla., passed away June 27, 2012, at Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans. He was waiting for a liver transplant at the time of his death.

Born Oct. 14, 1936, in Montgomery, Alabama, Bobby graduated from Sidney Lanier High School in 1955 and attended Auburn University. During his senior year he led the Lanier High School Marching Band as drum major. After college he joined the Alabama Air National Guard and started working for WSFA-TV in the production department.

In 1961, his unit, the 187th TAC Reconnaissance Group, was called to active duty during the Berlin Crisis, and he served on active duty until 1962. After his release from active duty with the U.S. Air Force, Bobby became a full-time member of the Alabama Air Guard. In 1966 he received a commission as a second lieutenant, and at the same time accepted a position as director of public information with the State of Alabama, Department of Conservation. He continued serving as a member of the Alabama Air Guard and retired as a major.

In 1973 he became director of public relations for the Alabama Petroleum Council in Montgomery, a position he held until 1975, when he was promoted to assistant director for the American Petroleum Council in Atlanta.

In 1978 Bobby joined Gulf Oil Corp. in Atlanta and worked as director of that company's regional public affairs office until Chevron acquired Gulf in 1985. He continued with Chevron as Southern Region Director of Public Affairs in Atlanta until his retirement in 1999.

Bobby Boone loved nature and spending time outdoors. He was happiest hunting, fishing and sharing the experience with his wife, daughter and friends. He holds the record for catching the largest Warsaw grouper of 310 lbs. in the 1999 Destin Fishing Rodeo.

He was an accomplished photographer whose photographs have been widely published. His most famous photograph was taken of former Gov. Lurleen Wallace holding a wild turkey she had killed while hunting with Bobby.

Bobby is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Deanna (Deedee) C. Boone; a daughter, Alison Boone Hildebrant, her husband, Steve, a granddaughter, Anne Marie of Monticello, Ga.; a stepson, Shawn Regan, his wife, Cassandra, grandchildren, Cheyenne Regan, Austin Regan and Savanna Regan of Crestview, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Anne; and his parents, Robert Newton and Flora Clark Boone.

Funeral services were held Friday, July 6, at Leak Memory Chapel Funeral Home, 945 Lincoln Road, Montgomery, Alabama, at 3 pm, with Pastor Richard S. Russ and Bishop Wesley H. Russ officiating. Burial followed at the family plot in Greenwood Cemetery, with full military honors.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to the Florida Wildlife Federation, P.O. Box 6870, Tallahassee, FL 32413-6870.

Our heartfelt sympathy to all the Boone family. Bobby Boone was such a quiet thoughtful gentleman. We served on the Florida Wildlife Federation board together and loved some of the same books. We remember him fondly. Godspeed. Franklin & Kathy Adams.

We were so saddened to learn that the last time we would see Bobby was at the last reunion. What a fine friend, family man, and officer he was. When I was a Captain and Bobby was a Major in the 187th, we worked in the "Frag Shop" during an ORI. All jobs are important in an ORI, and this was no exception, and although Bobby was new to this kind of work, he personified the notion of "Grace under pressure." It was such a pleasure to work with this man and to have him as a friend for so many years after that. I grieve his loss with all of you out there.

Officers that came out of the enlisted ranks like Bobby did are often the best we had, and Bobby was one of those. And I looked up to him not only because he was tall, but because he earned the respect he was given! And, no, Bobby was not a "rated" officer, for he wore no wings, but you have wings now, old friend. You have wings.
God Bless.

My friend Bobby,
How Mr. Bill and myself will miss our annual hunt with you and Allison. Your Father was the definition of a Southern Gentleman, a good friend and a mentor. He made a difference in my life. God speed Bobby and tell those in heaven " Don't shoot low"

I have known the Boone family for 35 years. We moved in right down the street from them when I was just 9 years old and Alison was our bus monitor. Momma and Daddy Boone, as I called them, became my second parents. Alison was a great big sister to me as well. Momma and Daddy Boone would take me to the high school football games to watch Alison's drill team competition and then we would go to Farrell's with all of them. Daddy Boone was the perfect southern father, sweet, gentile and guiding with a firm hand. Their home was a refuge for me in times of struggle. Daddy Boone will always hold a special place in my heart. Alison, I love ya.

Growing up as Alison's best friend, I spent a lot of time at the Boone's house and got to go on many trips with them. Mr. Boone loved to joke with me (although I could never tell if he was joking or being serious!). He made me feel like part of the family. I will miss him. Love to you, my sweet Alison.

Bobby was a very good fisherman. He spent many hours fishing with me on the Reveille II catching every thing from 310 lb warsaw to 20 lb red snapper. He was a dear friend and will be greatly missed.

I served with Bobby in the 187th Tac Recon Group, Alabama ANG, for ten years. I remember him as the consummate professional. He was always in good spirits with a ready smile. He was truly one of the good guys.

Bobby was my mentor in the ANG; I am honored to be in the first photo gallery picture with him! He was a great boss and a fine friend. He respected everyone....and was respected by everyone. He will be missed!
