Phillip Banks Burwell (1935-2016) - Class Of 1953

Philip Banks Burwell of Ramer, AL, age 81, died on July 14, 2016 after an extended and courageous battle with cancer. Philip was predeceased by his parents Dr. Philip K. Burwell and Lelia Banks Burwell of Montgomery, AL, and by his son Barrett Banks Burwell. He is survived by his beloved wife of 35 years, Louise Mims Burwell, son Philip Carter Burwell, Sr. and daughter-in-law Emily Adair Burwell of Birmingham, AL; his grandchildren, Philip Carter Burwell, Jr. and Jackson Edward Burwell of Birmingham; his sister and brother-in-law, Lelia Burwell Boggan and Robert L. Boggan; and his nephew Glen Boggan.

He graduated from Lanier High School in 1953 and attended Auburn University for two years, then served two years in Unites States Army, 3rd Armored division 29th armored infantry, Company D, Combat Command B. He then graduated from Huntingdon College in 1960. After graduation he began work at Merrill Lynch. In 1978, he and several colleagues opened an office in Montgomery for E.F. Hutton. He stayed with the firm and all succeeding firms until retiring from Smith Barney in 1998.

He would like to thank all the kind people that assisted during his final days, Baptist Hospice, all of his wonderful friends, and the board of directors and volunteer fire fighters of the Rolling Hills Lakes VFD. A private graveside service will be held in Montgomery, Alabama. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Rolling Hills Lakes VFD, 6120 Trotman Road, Montgomery, AL 36116, the Montgomery Cancer Center, 4145 Carmichael Road Montgomery, AL 36106, or your favorite charity.
