Dr. Irving Victor Cohen (1932-2012) - Class Of 1950

Dr. Irving Victor Cohen, age 80 and a longtime pediatrician in Birmingham, died unexpectedly at his home on November 25, 2012. Dr. Cohen grew up in Montgomery, Alabama and graduated from Sidney Lanier High School in 1950. He attended the University of Alabama and Medical College of Alabama, earning his Medical Doctorate in 1957.

After completing his pediatric internship at the University of Alabama Hospital, Dr. Cohen served in the Navy until 1960. He returned to Birmingham, Alabama, and began his residency at University Alabama Birmingham. After twenty-five years in private practice, he joined Pediatric Associates Group, P.A. In 2005, Dr. Cohen joined Children's Medical Group, P.C. in Birmingham where he worked alongside Dr. Millie McDaniel and Dr. Tracy Tindle, continuing his lifelong interest in the practice of pediatric medicine. Dr. Cohen was a member of the medical staff at Children's of Alabama since 1965, and a member of the Continuing Medical Education Committee since 1988

Dr. Cohen is predeceased by his parents, Victor Isaac Cohen and Mathilde Franco Cohen. He is survived by his sister, Rita C. Martin (Don), his brother, Albert V. Cohen (Rosalie), six nephews and nieces, and several great nephews and nieces along with many cousins, friends, and devoted former and current patients.

Graveside services were held on November 28, 2012, at 11:00 A.M. at Greenwood Cemetery with Rabbi Scott Kramer officiating. Pallbearers were John Bonham, Kevin Brightwell, Leon Capouano, Marc Erdberg, Buddy Rousso, and Ryan Weiss.

Visitation with the family was at Leak Memory Funeral Home one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Camp Smile-a-Mile, the Ronald McDonald House, or a charity of one's choice
