Joseph Turner Porter was born May 29, 1927 in Montgomery, AL to Joseph and Rosemarie Porter. He died April 24, 2012 at the Covenant Hospice Inpatient Residence in Pensacola, Fl.

Joe, a 1945 Lanier High graduate, proudly served in the U.S. Navy before returning to Montgomery to attend college. Following in his Father's footsteps, he left college and went into the construction business. He owned his own company, Joe Porter Builders, Inc., and developed subdivisions in and around the Montgomery area. After selling his company, Joe became an inspector for FHA and VA until his retirement and subsequent move to Gulf Shores.

Joe was very honored to have served as President of both the Montgomery Home Builders Assoc. and the Alabama State Home Builders Association.

Joe, who loved working with his hands and in his shop, was known for his woodworking and gardening. He always had a crossword puzzle and a jigsaw puzzle in the works. All who knew him noticed two things immediately - his beautiful blue eyes and his gentle kindness to all.

He is survived by his beautiful & loving wife, Gladys B. Porter of Foley; sons, Reginald and Joseph of Montgomery; brothers Tom (Mary Alice) of Gulf Breeze, FL and Frank (Doris) of Montgomery, AL; Stepchildren Teresa Hatcher of Gulf Shores, Peggy (Ronnie) Shoemaker, Vikki Cooper, Kathy (Johnny) Saxon, Wayne Austin, Christopher (Sarah) Austin and Ree (Mack) Yeargon. Granddaughter, Brittney Hatcher of Gulf Shores and many more step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his beloved sister, Rosemarie Nolen.

As a proud veteran, Joe served his country and community by being a very active member of American Legion Post 44, Gulf Shores; the Elk's Lodge #2782, Foley and his Church, St. Andrews by the Sea, Ft. Morgan.

A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday, May 1st, 2012 at Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Home, 2551 So. McKenzie St, Foley at 2:00PM with Rev. Robert Warren and Rev. Daniel Randall officiating. A Celebration of Life reception and visitation will follow immediately at the Elk's Lodge,2621 So. Juniper Street, Foley, Al.
