Sara Lou Evans (Armstead) (1928-2015) - Class Of 1946

Sara Lou Evans Armstead, 87, died at her home with her family on September 19, 2015.

Visitation will be Tuesday, September 22, from 5pm to 7pm at Leak Memory Chapel in Montgomery, Alabama. The funeral service will also be at Leak Memory on Wednesday, September 23, at 10:00 am. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.

Sara was born May 27, 1928, to Percy and Mary Boggs Evans and lived most of her life in Montgomery, graduating from Lanier High School. She married Roy Armstead on April 17, 1953. Sara was an active member of Open Acres Baptist Church and later Chisholm Baptist Church. She was an active member, volunteering and serving in various areas of each church. Professionally, she worked most of her career in banking at First Alabama Bank.

After retirement, she worked as a substitute teacher. She also volunteered with Partners in Education as a reading tutor in several elementary schools, with Hospice of Montgomery and with the Manna program at Chisholm Baptist.

Sara's most important work was taking care of family. She was a caregiver to both her mother Mary and her husband Roy as their health declined at the end of their lives. Her most rewarding jobs were raising her two sons and being a devoted grandmother.

Sara is survived by two sons, Richard Armstead and Gary (Karen) Armstead; her grandson, Tyler Armstead; and her brother, Ronnie (Jan) Evans.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her brother Virgil Evans.

Donations may be sent to Hospice of Montgomery.
