In Memory Of Our Poets

Joann Roberts (Hinson) (1930-2011) - Class Of 1945

JoAnne Roberts Hinson, 80, died on October 17, 2011 after an extended illness. Ms. Hinson was born in 1930 in Spring Garden, Alabama, to Joe Hebson Roberts and Tommie Louise Stewart. She graduated from Sidney Lanier High School and then from Huntingdon College, both in Montgomery. She was a microbiologist for the Alabama State Health Department for more than 30 years. Since retiring, she spent much of her time volunteering at the First United Methodist Church. She loved her Arts & Crafts Group there, her Bible study group, and working in her garden. She also enjoyed attending performances at Alabama Shakespeare Festival and the time she spent volunteering for them. Ms. Hinson is survived by her children: Anne Roberts of Irvington, NY; Ken Young of Old Bethpage, NY (wife Debby and children Emily and Josh); Brigham R. Young of Leominster, MA (wife Marie Cloutier and son Wesley Young); and Leigh Hodges of Alabaster, AL (children Evans, Stewart, and Luke). A celebration of her life will be held on Wednesday, October 26 at 11:30 a.m. in the Sanctuary of the First United Methodist Church. A time for visitation with the family will be held at 10:30 that morning in the Bay Section of the Fellowship Hall. Honorary pallbearers include Tay Bond, Emily Bowdoin, Fletcher Hyde, Danny McSwain, Tom McCabe, and the members of the Wednesday Crafts Group at the First United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Music Ministry of the First United Methodist Church, or to the Karl Stegall Seminary Scholarship Endowment Foundation. The family wishes to express its deepest appreciation to the compassionate staff of Hospice of Montgomery and of John Knox at Home, for its kind and devoted care of their mother in her final days.
