James Keno "Jake" Huffstutler, Sr. (1927-2006) - Class Of 1945

HUFFSTUTLER, James Keno (Jake ) Sr., a native of Montgomery, Alabama and a long time resident of Mobile, died on August 15th in a local hospital. Jake was born on February 6, 1927 in Montgomery where he attended Sidney Lanier High School, leaving during his senior year to serve in the United States Navy. He served for eighteen months in the Pacific theater before being discharged in 1946. Jake graduated from the University of Alabama where he was a scholarship baseball player for the Crimson Tide from 1947 to 1950. While at the University he was an Alabama " A " Club member and member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. He was recalled to active naval service in 1950 where he served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Coral Sea during the Korean conflict. Jake was employed by Crawford & Company for twenty-four years where he was the branch manager of the Mobile operation before starting his own insurance adjusting firm, Huffstutler & Associates in Mobile.  He was a past presi-dent of the Mobile Claims Association, a member of the Mobile Downtown Kiwanis Club, and participated as a high school football referee from 1955 to 1975. Jake and his family have been members of St Paul's Episcopal Church since first arriving in Mobile in 1954. Jake was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Burns Huffstutler, his parents Louis Dean & Loreitta Bailey Huffstutler and his mother-in-law, Maudie Phillips Burns. Survivors include one sister, Louvola Francis Wisneski of Houston, Texas, daughters Angela Joan Carpenter of Mountain Brook, Alabama, and Shannon Burns ( Noel ) Bedwell of Mobile, and one son James Keno ( Nancy ) Huffstutler, Jr. of Mobile, and six grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at St Paul's Episcopal Church on August 17th at 10:00 am. The family will receive friends in the Parish Hall of St Paul's Church prior to the Service beginning at 8:30 am. A graveside service will be held at the Lincoln Cemetery in Lincoln, Alabama on August 17th at 4:00 pm. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the American Diabetes Association, PO Box 1131 Fairfax, VA 22038 or St Paul's Episcopal Church, 4051 Old Shell Road, Mobile, Alabama 36608.
