1925 - 2005

Daniel Broughton Long, Sr died after a brief illness Tuesday, December 27, 2005, at Mercy Medical in Daphne, Alabama. Mr. Long was born July 23, 1925, in Montgomery, Alabama, and graduated from Sidney Lanier High School in 1943. His last home was in Robertsdale, Alabama. 
Mr. Long was a professional baseball player for several years with the Brooklyn Dodgers farm team. Afterwards he owned and operated a restaurant in Montgomery, Alabama for fourteen years. Mr. Long served one term on the Alabama Board Of Pardons and roles. Until his retirement Mr. Long served as Executive Director of the Alabama Govenor’s Commission on Physical Fitness.

Mr. Long was married for 45 years to Muriel Savage Long. She preceded him in death in 1998. Mr. Long was also preceded in death by his parents, John Edward and Annie Mae Long, Sr., his brothers John Edward Long Jr., Jack C. Long, and his sister Edna Mae Long Andrews.

Visitation was held Thursday, December 29, 2005, from 5pm to 7pm, at Southern Memorial Funeral Home on Highland Avenue in Montgomery, Alabama. Funeral Services were held Friday at 2pm at First United Methodist Church, Cloverdale Park, Montgomery, Alabama. Dr. Karl Stegall and Bishop Paul Duffey officiated. A graveside service followed at Greenwood Cemetery. Pallbearers were Daniel Broughton Long, III, Matthew Aaron Black, Kevin Wesley Long, Steve Stanley, Mark Meyer, and John Andrews.
