Robert "Bob" B. McDonald (1922-2006) - Class Of 1941

MCDONALD, Robert B., died Thursday, March 9, 2006, at home. He was born December 5, 1922 in Montgomery, AL, the son of the late Beauford F. and Rosa Kate Rutledge McDonald, originally of Covington GA. He is survived by his wife, Patricia L. Hooks Scott McDonald. He was predeceased by his brother William H. McDonald of Montgomery. Among his survivors are two daughters, Angela L. Copeland (Larry) of Millbrook, AL, Deborah L. Dobler (Jim) of Kirkland WA, and a son, Charles D. Scott of Wasilla AK. Other family members include a nephew, Hunter McDonald (wife Patty and daughter Murray), a niece, Aimsley R. McDonald, and a cousin, Christine Bassett. Grandchildren include Monica L. Jordan (Jeff), Jewell M. Evans (Tom), and Mark E. Keesee. Among the great grandchildren are Jeff M. Jordan, Savannah L. Jordan, Julian R. Evans, Nolan T. Evans and Emma J. Evans. Bob graduated from Sidney Lanier High School, Montgomery AL, and joined the Army Air Corps after graduation, serving during 1943-1944. After his wartime service, he studied at the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, and earned a bachelor's degree in history and English. He established and chaired the first veteran's organization on the Tuscaloosa campus, and had been a member of the American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans. He went on to earn a law degree from Stetson University, Delano FL, and passed the bar exam in Florida.  During a long and distinguished career in state government, Bob was the former Assistant Administrator for the Appalachian Program in the Alabama Development Office (ADO), and the State Plans Coordinator, Office of the Governor, in the Office of State Planning and Federal Programs. He later served as the Chairman, State Department of Pensions and Security Advisory Committee, was a member of the Policy Advisory Committee, Alabama Coalminers Respiratory Disease Program, in the Jefferson Health Foundation, Inc., Birmingham, AL. McDonald had also been an Appointee to the Governor's Study Committee for Libraries.  Bob was a founding member of the Montgomery Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, and served in numerous leadership positions, including several terms as President, Program Chair, and Board Member. He wrote A History of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Montgomery (1995). He served as Chair of the American Heritage Association, was an active member of the American Institute of Certified Planners, member of the Montgomery Archeological Society, the Phi Alpha Theta history honorary, the Saint Andrews Society, and served as President of the Friends of Fort Toulouse. An active sportsman, lecturer on historical topics, and men-tor to many, he will be fondly re-membered and sorely missed by family and many friends.A memorial service is scheduled for Sunday, March 19, 2006, at 2:00 PM, at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Montgomery, 2810 Atlanta Highway, 36109 (279-9517). In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Friends of the Forts, Ft. Toulouse/Jackson Park, 2521 West Ft. Toulouse Road, Wetumpka, AL 36093 (567-3002), the Unitarian Uni-versalist Fellowship of Montgomery, or the charity of your choice.
