Kalman "Kal" Shwarts, Jr. (1921-2005) - Class Of 1939

SHWARTS Jr., Kalman, died Monday, June 27, 2005 after a brief illness. Born September 25, 1921 in Montgomery, AL to Ella and Kalman Shwarts, Sr., he was the youngest and last surviving of three children and was preceded in death by his wife Gloria Haas Shwarts and Patricia Haas, widow of Gloria's brother Lewis Haas. He is survived by two children - Richard S. Shwarts (Patricia) of Jacksonville, FL and Ellen S. Riley (John) of Montgomery, AL five grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and numerous loving nieces, nephews and friends. After graduating from the University of Alabama, Mr. Shwarts served proudly as a navigator - bomber in WWII. He was the third generation of Klein and Son Jewelers.  He began his 70 year career at the age of 13, became president and always regarded his friends and associates as family. He was past president of the Alabama Retail Jewelers Association, Downtown Unlimited, The Standard Club and The Capitol City Kiwanis Club, of which he was a member of for over 50 years and never missed a meeting. He was a member of the Jaycees, Toastmasters and Temple Beth Or and served on the Temple Board for many years. A memorial will be held 11am on Friday, July 1st at Temple Beth Or. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Baptist Hospice, Temple Beth Or Historical Fund or to ones favorite charity.
