Algernon Pope Gordon (1922-2010) - Class Of 1939

GORDON, Algernon Pope, 88, a Montgomery resident, passed away Wednesday, November 17, 2010. Services will be held on Saturday, November 20. The visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., and a graveside service will be held in Greenwood Cemetery at 3:00 p.m. with Dr. Jay Wolf officiating. Judge Gordon was born in Greensboro, Alabama and later moved to Montgomery where he graduated from Lanier High School. While in high school, he played the clarinet in the Lanier band. He also played the violin in Mrs. Fannie Marks Seibels' orchestra. He received his BS degree from the University of Alabama in 1943 just before going on active duty during World War II in the European theater. After serving over 30 years, he retired from the US Army Reserves as a Colonel. After the War, he returned to law school at the University of Alabama where he received his Juris Doctorate. He practiced law in Montgomery until he was appointed US Bankruptcy Judge in the Middle District of Alabama. At the expiration of his 14 year term, he enjoyed playing golf, gardening, cooking, genealogical research, computer programming, friends and family. Judge Gordon was preceded in death by his father, Matthew Collins Gordon, his mother, Willie Belle Roden, his sister, Belle Gordon Gresham and his son, Algernon Pope Gordon, Jr. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Jane Paget Gordon, his sister Ruth Gordon Mullen (Bob), his daughter, Carol Gordon Bell, his daughter-in-law, Shelton Gordon Jenkins, five grandchildren, Laura Bell Kirby (Randall), Angie Bell Beaver (John), Matthew Collins Gordon, Marijane Gordon Hudson (Jarrett) and Sarah Elizabeth Montgomery Gordon, and five great grandchildren, Catherine Frances Beaver, John Thomas Beaver, III, Alyssa Joy Kirby, Micah Randall Kirby and Ethan Matthew Kirby.
