James Franklin Donovan (1920-2012) - Class Of 1939

James Franklin Donovan, age 92, of Cahaba Heights in Vestavia, AL, died on Friday, October 5, 2012. He was born March 4, 1920 in Montgomery, AL and graduated from Sidney Lanier High School where he was president of DeMolay Fraternity. He graduated from Huntington College with a degree in Business and studied law at Jones Law School. Mr. Donovan worked for the Veterans Administration in Montgomery until 1956. He moved t o Birmingham and worked for the Social Security Administration until he retired in 1978. He proudly served in the US Army and was stationed in Europe during World War II and fought in the Battle of The Bulge. He was a member of Cahaba Heights United Methodist Church, Shirts and Skirts Square Dance Club and a charter member of Altadena Valley Country Club. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Dorothy Harper Donovan, his parents John and Stella (Thompson) Donovan, brother, John Donovan and sister, Mary Ellen Smith. He is survived by his son, Tim Donovan, daughter, Pat Hope and her husband Bud Hope. Graveside services will be held at Southern Heritage Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. October 11, 2012 with a visitation one hour prior at Southern Heritage Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to Cahaba Heights UMC 3139 Cahaba Heights Road Vestavia, AL 35243.
