Philip Allen Sellers (1920-2005) - Class Of 1938

SELLERS, Philip Allen, 84, (Colonel, United States Army Reserves) a resident of Montgomery, Alabama, died Saturday, October 1, 2005 at his home. Funeral Services will be Monday, October 3, 2005 at 10:00 am at St. John’s Episcopal Church with Rev. Robert C. Wisnewski, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow immediately after the service at Greenwood Cemetery. Mr. Sellers was born on October 12, 1920, the son of William Leon and Julia Lightfoot Sellers. He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Caroline Rudulph Sellers, by his brothers, William Leon Sellers, Jr. and John Light-foot Sellers, and by a sister, Jule Sellers Seibels Montjoy. He was a graduate of Sidney Lanier High School and of Washington and Lee University, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. A veteran of World War II, he served in New Guinea and the Philippines. He was a member and former Senior Warden of St. John’s Episcopal Church. He is survived by his four children: Susan Sellers Ewing and husband, A. Hugh Ewing, III of Richmond, Virginia; Philip Lightfoot Sellers and wife, Margie of Pintlala, Alabama; Ellen Sellers McDowell and husband, Rex W. McDowell of Dallas, Texas; and William Burwell Sellers and wife, Lee of Montgomery. Grandchildren: Philip H. Ewing, Caroline M. Ewing, Emily A. McDowell, Virginia S. McDowell, Mary Susan McDowell, Katherine B. McDowell, Philip A. Sellers, II, Thomas R. Sellers, Mary Ellen Sellers, Arthur A. Sellers, George S. Sellers and Caroline L. Sellers. He was also survived by a sister, Becky Sellers Doe and husband, Weldon W. Doe, Jr.  Pallbearers will be: Weldon W. Doe, III, Robert E. Seibels, III, Vaughn R. Dozier, J. Douglas Woodruff, Jr., William B. Jackson, Jr. and John P. Lightfoot. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the St. John’s Episcopal Church Building Fund, The Philip and Caroline Rudulph Sellers Arts Fund at Sweet Briar College, Sweet Briar, Virginia 24595 or the Julia Lightfoot Sellers Scholarship Fund at Huntingdon College.Leak-Memory Chapel Directing
