His Word Was His Bond

Owner of Mason Lumber Company
Montgomery Advertiser

Well-known and respected in the community as the founder and owner of Mason Lumber Company, V.L. "Buck" Mason died Tuesday, December 6th, 2005, at Jackson Hospital, Montgomery, Alabama. He was 85.

Services were held at 11am on Friday, December 9th, 2005, in the Stakely Sanctuary at First Baptist Church.

Mason started his lumber company in 1946 after he returned from the South Pacific, where he served as an officer during World War II. The company has been on North Court Street for 59 years.

His wife, Charlotte, spoke Wednesday about the early years of Mason Lumber.

"Everybody who came back from the war, they had to start from nothing," she said. "It was just a very low economy for returning war vets."

But with help from his father, she said, the Masons were able to get the business established. Over time, Buck Mason's genuine spirit and sincerity sustained the business, family members said.

"He taught me everything I needed to know to be successful," said son David Mason, who lives in Clearwater, Florida. Mason also is survived by a daughter, Susan Kocher.

"His word was his bond," David Mason said.

He also said his father was proud of how long the business had stayed in the same location.

In addition to his professional life, Mason was active at his church, family and friends said, and he served as president of the Montgomery Lions Club.

He was a dedicated hunter and fisherman who worked to improve wildlife habitats in the area.
