H.D. was born in Montgomery on April 28, 1919. He was a graduate of Sidney Lanier High School and joined the Air Force during WW II to pursue his passion for flying. In 1943 he married his high school sweetheart, Beth Melvin. After a year of training pilots and navigators on the new 'Radar' equipment, he was stationed in Grottaglie, Italy, with the 449th Bombardment Group. From this station he flew B24's over occupied Europe.

After the war he continued flying with the Military Air Transport Service (MATS) across Europe, Africa, and the United States.
