Horace Woodrow Mitchell (1918-2007) - Class Of 1935

MITCHELL, Horace Woodrow, age 88, passed away peace­fully Monday, February 19th, after a brief illness.  Mr. Mitchell was a resident of Montgomery, Alabama and most recently Millbrook, Alabama.  Born dur­ing the difficult days of World War I, Mr. Mitchell was named for President Woodrow Wilson and his "Uncle Horace," who was fighting in France in 1918.  Mr. Mitchell attended Lanier High School and enlisted in the United States Navy after the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941.  After World War II, he be­gan a distinguished career in law enforcement.  Mr. Mitchell served with the Alabama High­way Patrol, the Montgomery Police Department, and the Montgomery County Sheriff's Department.  As the Assistant Chief Deputy of the Montgom­ery County Sheriff's Depart­ment, Mr. Mitchell became widely known as an outstand­ing criminal investigator and an expert in fingerprint identifi­cation. He was an active member of the Alcazar Shrine Temple's Railroad Unit for many years. He was a long time member of Heatherton Heights Methodist Church and recently Coosada Baptist Church. 

Mr. Mitchell is survived by his be­loved wife of sixty-four years, Sara Duncan Mitchell and his son, Phillip Carl Mitchell (A­ngie). The true joy of his life was his precious grandson, Robert Turner Mitchell.  He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Thomas F. Duncan, neph­ew, William L. Duncan, numer­ous nieces and nephews, and his "buddy",  Dr. David Franco.  Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 21, 2007 at 11:00 AM at Leak-Memory Chapel with Rev. Earl Crutch­field,  Rev. David Stewart, and Dr. Jim Graham officiating.  Burial will follow the service in Greenwood Cemetery.  Visitation will be on Tuesday, February 20, 2007 from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM at Leak-Memory Cha­pel. Serving as pallbearers will be David Seal, Mark Bloss, Paul Smelley, Robert Childree, Rich­ard Girdner, and Ron Capel.  Honorary pallbearers are Da­vid Shumaker, Ocie Thompson, Ed Jones, Billy Mason, mem­bers of the Alcazar Shrine Tem­ple Railroad Unit, and "The Helping Hands Club." In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Leak-Memory Chapel Directing.
