Richard S. Brooks (1915-2010) - Class Of 1935

Richard S. Brooks, 94 and a lifelong resident of Montgomery, Alabama, died on September 10, 2010. The family will receive visitors in Ascension Hall at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension on September 13, 2010, at 1:00 p.m. with a funeral service to follow at 2:30 p.m. Reverend John Coleman & Reverend Chip Broadfoot officiating and a graveside service at Greenwood Cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Jane & Ancil Dallas Brooks;
brothers, Tyler, Osbun, J.T., Leo, Robert & Bill Brooks; sisters, Eva Grace Brabham, Mary Emma English, Frances Brooks & Mildred Hinton; wife, Idelle S. Brooks; and son, Richard S. Brooks, Jr.

He is survived by his daughter, Ellen Brooks of Montgomery; son, William Brooks of Birmingham; nieces and nephews, Alice Gardner, Thomas Brooks, Marshall Hendrix and Bob Brooks and cousin, Mamie Brooks Dunn.

He was a graduate of Sidney Lanier High School in Montgomery (Class of 1935), the University of Alabama (Class of 1939) and the University of Alabama School of Law (Class of 1947).

He served as an officer in the U.S. Army during World War II and later retired from the Alabama National Guard as a Lt. Colonel. Following law school, he practiced law for over 50 years. He worked in the Alabama Department of Industrial Relations until retirement and then in private law practice for many years.

He also was appointed as a representative from Alabama on the Appalachian Regional Commission and was a founder of the North Montgomery Water Authority.

He was a member of the Church of the Ascension, Alcazar Shriners, Masons, Montgomery Country Club and was a past president of the Montgomery Lions Club and Phi Gamma Delta fraternity at the University of Alabama.

An avid Alabama football fan, he also loved big band music and all types of gardening.
