Milton Braun Hesslein (1918-2010) - Class Of 1934

MILTON HESSLEIN - JANUARY 19, 1918 - OCTOBER 8, 2010 - Milton Braun Hesslein was born in Montgomery AL to Julius and Hanna Braun Hesslein. He and his younger brother Robert grew up in Montgomery where he attended Sidney Lanier high school. He went on to study engineering at Alabama Polytechnic Institute at Auburn. He married Shirley Bob in New York City as WWII began. He joined the US Army as a Captain, manufacturing munitions throughout the war. He worked as an engineer, manager and business owner until his retirement. Milton was a particularly good designer and problem solver. He also became a prolific sculptor with a distinctive style and flair. Shirley Hesslein passed away in 1992 shortly after their 50th wedding anniversary. Milton spent the last sixteen years of his life with his partner, Gloria Haister. They were active volunteers for several programs until early this year. Milton remained actively creative throughout his life, sculpting into his 90's. He was eager to fix what he could, build something needed or just lend a hand. His gregarious personality and sense of humor endeared him to all. He made friends easily wherever he went. Milton is survived by his partner Gloria Haister, his daughters Janet and Laura Hesslein, son-in-law Allen Sanders, sisters-in-law Shirley Bob and Peggy Hesslein, nephews, a niece, numerous grand- nieces and -nephews, great grand-nieces and -nephews and Gloria's extended family.
