DOWNEY, Elizabeth Tyler Gunter “Beppy”, ninety-one, affectionately known as “Two Mama,” died on March 10, 2007 at Onslow Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. The beloved wife of the late Bruce J. Downey, Jr., she was a resident of Jacksonville since 1946. Mrs. Downey grew up in Montgomery Alabama, the daughter of its long-time Mayor, William A. Gunter, Jr. and Julia Scott Gunter. She graduated from The Semple School in New York City. She met her husband when he was stationed in Montgomery as a pilot with the Army Air Corps during World War II. She returned with him to North Carolina after the war to raise her family. She is survived by her son, Bruce J. Downey III of Montgomery, her daughter, Elizabeth D. Raymond of Jacksonville, and their spouses, Shirley S. Downey and Mat C. Raymond, Jr. Also surviving her are her grandchildren, Mat C.Raymond III and his wife, Ann; Victoria Tyler Downey and her fiancé, Steve Ficklin; Elizabeth Raymond Beacham and her husband, Stephen; Bruce J.Downey IV and his wife, Jennifer; and John Stewart Downey. She had two great grandchildren, Mat C. Raymond IV and Tyler Sloan Beacham. She was one of seven children and leaves behind numerous loving cousins, nieces and nephews in Montgomery. Her special friends who helped her were Tiffany Clayton, Dorothy Poinsette, and Jessie Mae Thompson. The Funeral will be held at 2:00pm at St. Anne’s Episcopal Church on Wednesday March 14th. Burial will follow at Onslow Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:00 pm until 8:00pm at Jones Funeral Home.
