Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Bethea Vickers

Born: October 14, 1911, Montgomery, AL
Died: August 17, 1993, Florence, AL

Betty was the daughter of Theodore Baldwin Bethea and Minna Wellborn Dent Bethea.   She attended the "old" Lanier at Baldwin, and graduated in 1928, the same year that construction started on the "new" Lanier.  Afterwards she attended Women's College at Montevallo, Alabama.

Betty married Alwyn Vickers, the son of Dr. Thomas Vickers and Leonora Oppenheimer Vickers, on June 20, 1933.  Alwyn's father, Thomas Vickers, was a Unitarian minister for 7 years, starting in 1867, and he served as the president of the First Congregational Church in Cincinnati.  He was chief librarian of the Cincinnati Public Library from 1874-1884, and was also a professor of the University of Cincinnati, teaching several subjects.  A few years later, in 1877, he was elected president of the University of  Cincinnati.  Alwyn's sister, Helen Oppenheimer, the first woman admitted to the University of Alabama, also wrote the words to the Alma Mater.  Alwyn was employed with the cotton industry, and upon retirement became an Episcopal minister and was ordained at Grace Episcopal Church in Mt. Meigs, Alabama in 1970.  Alwyn died August 13, 1984.

Betty was a devoted wife and loving mother who enjoyed a well maintained home and garden.  She was an avid reader of books and current affairs, and was an accomplished bridge player in her younger years.  She enjoyed people and frequently entertained at home, being a good cook, particularly of breads and desserts.

While Alwyn was an Episcopal minister, Betty accompanied him in all his duties,  She was a great football fan, devoted to her University of Alabama Crimson Tide.

She derived great satisfaction from managing all of her own financial holdings.  Besides her church affiliations, she was a member of the Francis Marion Chapter of the DAR in Montgomery, Alabama, and of the Colonial Dames of America.

Betty and Alwyn had two daughters:

Elizabeth Bethea Vickers Warren
Minna Catherine Vickers Jerkins

They had six grandsons, and at last count, eight great grandchildren.

Betty was the sister of Sarah Baldwin Bethea (Roth) (Lanier Class of 1936), and she was the only aunt of Minna Dent Roth (Hill) (Lanier Class of 1970).
