W. S. "Billy" Newell (1921-2009) - Class Of 1943

W.S. “Billy” Newell,  died Sept. 19 at age 87. Mr. Newell founded W.S. Newell Construction in 1951 and became known as a “legend in road building”. His company was responsible for much of the interstate and highway construction in the Montgomery area. He was also known for Montgomery area landmarks such as an Interstate 65 sign reading “Go to church or the devil will get you!” and a plot of land off Bell Road that is home to deer and buffalo. A section of I-65 near Prattville that was his first interstate project now bears his name
